  • Feeling of wide/loose vagina

  • Gas-like noises during intercourse

What makes our care
exceptional

Dr. Ashford is both an OBGYN and a board-certified specialist in Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery. His knowledge, training, and experience extends well beyond "plastic surgery." This is important. His objective is to help you achieve the desired outcome both aesthetically and functionally.

Dr. Ashford uses an entirely different approach than most surgeons. He determines what will work best for each woman and her individual needs. In some circumstances, non-surgical solutions achieve the right results. For other women, a combination of therapies and/or surgery is recommended.

Vaginal Rejuvenation Options & Procedures

Each of these treatments is particularly effective in specific situations. During your consulation, Dr. Ashford can make a determination if one or more of these treatments is right for you.

FemiLift

FemiLift is a new CO2 laser which encourages new collagen production for healthier vaginal tissue as well as tightening of the vagina. The same therapy around the collagen tissue surrounding the bladder and urethra can help decreases urinary leakage.

ThermiVa®

ThermiVa uses radiofrequency energy to gently heat tissue. This stimulates collagen production so your body rebuilds with its own collagen, naturally. A special wand applicator is used which may be applied externally to labia and vulvar tissues to restore normal tissue tone and function.

Viveve® (Formerly Geneveve)

Viveve is a treatment that uses gentle deep heating and surface cooling to stimulate the body’s natural collagen formation process. During a comfortable single-session treatment, Geneveve works on a cellular level to rebuild and restore collagen within the vaginal tissue – without surgery and without disrupting the surface tissue.

The O-Shot®

The O-Shot is a non-invasive therapeutic treatment for women suffering from incontinence and anorgasmia - the inability to achieve orgasm with sexual intercourse. This particular therapy has had a significant amount of media attention in the past several years and has become increasingly popular with many women.

Often, the O-Shot is combined with FemiLift or ThemiVa to get maximum results.

The Vaginal Rejuvenation Procedure

This procedure (also known as vaginoplasty) decreases the diameter of the vagina both internally and externally and strengthens the musculature of the vagina and supporting tissue. Since many women also experience stress urinary incontinence as a result of muscle tone reduction, they often choose to have this corrected at the same time.

Exceptional Combined Treatment:
Multimodality Full Compartment Vaginoplasty

This unique combination of procedures is offered only by Dr. Ashford and our clinic. To achieve an absolutely outstanding outcome, Dr. Ashford combines FemiLift, Vaginoplasty, and Pelvic Floor Muscle Conditioning. Each of these procedures on its own has great results, but in Dr. Ashford's experience, when combined the result is unparalleled.

Frequently Asked
Questions

What is the difference between Vaginal Rejuvenation and Labiaplasty?

Vaginal Rejuvenation is the tightening the musculature of the vagina to remedy the relaxation that may occur due to childbirth or the natural aging process. Labiaplasty or labia reduction is a surgical process to reshape or resize the inner "lips" of the labia. The two processes may be combined, but are very different procedures.

How long does the procedure take?

In most cases, the procedure takes about an hour. Since everyone has a different anatomy and there may be other factors involved, the time may vary for you. Dr. Ashford can advise you when you come in for an appointment prior to the procedure.

I may not be done having kids. Does this impact whether or not I should have the procedure?

Yes, it can. The vaginal birth process may undo the rejuvenation, so it's best to wait until you're done having kids.

I have not had children but am experiencing the kind of vaginal relaxation you describe. Is this procedure right for me?

Possibly. Everyone's anatomy is unique. The best way to find out is to schedule an appointment and consult with Dr. Ashford about your particular situation.

Are the non-surgical procedures painful? Will I bleed?

No, these procedures are not painful. Most women say it is more comfortable than having a pap smear. There is no bleeding.

I suffer from vaginal dryness. Will FemiLift or ThermiVa make it worse?

No. If anything it may help to improve lubrication. Recent studies showed improvement in the dryness caused by menopause symptoms.

What type of equipment is used with FemiLift and ThermiVa?

For both treatments, the equipment that comes into contact with patients inside and outside the vagina is a single-use, sterile, disposable covering that prevents transmission of infections.

FemiLift uses a specialized laser to create the energy that is used to bring about the desired tightening effect or correct urinary incontinence. It induces new collagen to form in the underlying vaginal tissues. The same kind of laser has been used for many years on the face for rejuvenation and smoothing of wrinkles.

ThermiVa uses radiofrequency energy to gently heat tissue both internally and externally. This is the same safe technology that has been used for non-surgical dermatological applications in aesthetics and other medical specialties.

Is FemiLift okay for women with vaginal thrush, cystitis or endometriosis?

Thrush: FemiLift will not make your condition worse, but if you are prone to getting a thrush then it would be a good idea to obtain from over-the-counter treatments such as Canesten about 2 to 3 days prior to your planned laser treatment.

Cystitis: This treatment has not been associated with any worsening of cystitis type symptoms such as increased urination frequency or burning sensation when urinating.

Endometriosis: In most cases this treatment is okay for women with endometriosis. If you suffer from intense, deep pelvic pain during intercourse, Dr. Ashford may advise against FemiLift and suggest an alternative.

I want to have a baby in a few years. Should I have FemiLift now? How long after having a baby should I wait?

FemiLift is effective for two years. If you are planning pregnancy within two years or less, we suggest that you wait until after the birth. Once you have given birth, we suggest that you wait at least 3 months to ensure that any scars from tears or an episiotomy have had a chance to heal and the vaginal tone has recovered naturally. The procedure is safe for nursing mothers.

How long is the recovery time after FemiLift?

Most women experience no pain during or after the procedure. You will be asked to abstain from penetrative intercourse for 5 days. Strenuous exercise should be avoided for 3 days following the procedure. There are no restrictions for bathing or saunas.

How many Femilift treatments are needed?

Typically, most women have a good response to 2-3 treatments. Treatment effectiveness is 24 months or more. Dr. Ashford can advise you on the time between treatments.

Will my birth control interfere with these vaginal rejuvenation treatments?

No.

Is patient financing available?

Yes! Minnesota Labiaplasty and Minnesota Women's Care offer financing through American Healthcare Lending and Care Credit. We also accept most major credit cards.
